Renting a Lens - Nikon 70-200mm
I just rented a Nikon 70-200mm f2.8 lens.
I'm doing a photography course 5-7 June and wanted a better lens so I can get maximum benefit from the course with a pro lens. I've read so many great reports about this lens, and I've been somewhat dissapointed with the quality of my 18-200VR lens. The 18-200 is small, lightweight and does okay, but it lacks the speed and quality that I'm looking for.
I've been sceptical on whether I'd actually see a difference in quality, but in the few days I've used the 70-200 - I'm blown away. Now I want to buy one.
The lens arrived early, which gave me the weekend to test and get used to it. I shot little league baseball and the kids. Wow. I'm so pleased with the results, and despite being so heavy, the lens was easy to handle.
I handheld, but the images came out very sharp, and I love the extra speed. It meant I could shoot in weak light and I had the shallow depth of field when I needed it.
What I like?
- Quality is amazing. The images are super sharp (even though I shot handheld).
- Its a very strudy, well built lens
- The zoom ring is solid and I find it easy to rotate when shooting
What I don't Like?
- It is a really heavy lens. Makes my bag a lot heavier, and when you shoot your arms feel it.
- I don't like the tripod attachment ring. So far I have shot mainly handheld, but I'd probably replace it with the Really Right Stuff replacement option.
This lens is now definitely on my list. I'll probably end up selling my 18-200, and replacing it with the 70-200 and a wide option. Now I just need to start saving.
I'll be using the lens in South Africa for 2 weeks with 1.4 and 1.7 teleconvertors - so I will report back on how that works.
